micro:bit comes with easy to use USB interface and 5 ring connectors. But if you need to get all available IO out for your applications via the 21 edge pins, you will need this connector/socket. It Breakout or extend all the 21 edge pins from micro:bit and expands the capabilities of the development platform by providing access to more pins and allowing for connections to the I2C and SPI buses. Though you still need a PCB to break it out properly to say breadboard or certain standard interface, we are working on that.

In case, you need to design your own breakout, this connector is essential.
